The Art of Healing the Brain
by Lela Watson

Scientists and progressive therapists are revealing how trauma affects the brain, sometimes putting brain cells into a form of stasis. Trauma, when severe, can freeze parts of the brain. Without reactivation of these places, we lose certain capacities or retain fears, phobias and blockages that prevent us from living fuller lives.

Trauma can derive from accidents, loss of a loved one, physical and emotional abuse, violent acts or holding strong negative emotions for a long time. To heal we need to locate and effectively work with the effect of the trauma. Animals have an instinctive processes that allows them to release the effects of trauma and gain equilibrium, a survival skill. Most humans have lost this capacity and 'store' the effects of trauma in the brain and body.

With a new understanding of the brain we see how it works holistically when encouraged to activate and use both sides of the brain to look at the trauma's source. This is where art comes in. To create art we need both sides of the brain, and simply drawing with crayons helps activate the brain's holistic capacities. By using art we bypass our dependency on words, opening new ways to look at ourselves.

Instead of complaining of a shoulder ache, we draw a picture which we can now apply to that part of the body. When the mind perceives this pain in a different way it begins to shift it almost immediately or expose the true source of the trouble, making it possible to work directly with the cause. This approach is effective in dealing with the effects of trauma on many levels and healing through our innate capacities.

As we release the effects of various forms of trauma, fears and frozen parts of the brain, we use our potential to a greater degree to open new avenues of creative expression, achieve better physical coordination and gain a better sense of our connections.
